If you know me in real life (hi hello), chances are you’ve heard me talk about Ashley aka bestdressed aka my favorite Youtuber ever. If you’re into fashion or just looking for a new person to watch (and waste hours of your life on), I recommend checking out her videos, they are both incredibly aesthetic and also really funny – really can’t ask for more. ANYWAY, I was watching her latest video about her favorite movies and got inspired to write about mine. Unlike Ashley, I’m no movie buff by any means, but I have been keeping a list of my favorite movies (for days where I just can’t decide on watching anything new) and I thought I’d share them with you!
Brooklyn
(Maybe hot take) Before watching this movie, I never liked old historical stuff, they always seemed outdated and kinda boring to me. BUT not Brooklyn! Even though the premise is about the life of a young Irish immigrant girl set in the 1950s, this is one of the most relatable movies out there. I remember watching this for the first time in college and got hit right in the feels. There are so many parts that got me reflecting on my own life, especially when she was feeling homesick and lonely after moving to a new place. As someone who also migrated over alone and had to leave everything behind (twice), I feel for Eilis, the main character. I also like how this movie covers more than just romance, there’s also a lot about family, career, and her journey of finding and creating her new life. Plus, the cinematography is so beautiful. All around a great movie I love.
Before Sunrise
Another classic favorite of mine, Before Sunrise, is a movie about two strangers who met on a train and decided to spend one night in Vienna together. Simple premise, but filled with loads of interesting conversation and incredible chemistry that will get you hooked on them the whole time. There’s no need for visual effects, transitions, or fancy setups, two characters are enough to make you feel like you are part of their adventure. I don’t know if this is everyone’s cup of tea, as the movie seems rather slow, but I found it captivating and really really well done. If you watch this movie and find yourself wanting more, you’re in luck, it’s actually a series! Though Before Sunrise is my personal favorite, the other 2 are also well made and they each teach you a message about the different stage of life and relationships. These movies are all raw, charming, beautifully made, and I find myself rewatching over and over again. Plus, the romantic side of me really loves the idea of meeting someone by chance and fantasize that one day this will happen to me (lol). So yes, I am a fan.
Ruby Sparks
I remember watching Ruby Sparks for the first time on my flight home a while ago and 10 minutes in, I was hooked on it. This movie is so quirky and different in the best way possible and I’d give props to the two leading characters for making this somewhat odd premise works. The story is about a young novelist, Calvin, who’s going through a writing block and eventually was inspired to write about this new character named Ruby. To his surprise, Ruby comes to life and is now his real-life girlfriend, and Calvin is trying to live with this reality. This movie is a good mix of romance, fun, and slightly twisted, and I enjoyed the journey it takes me on. If you’re looking for a nontypical romcom, this one is for you.
Someone Great
Anna talked about this movie in her monthly favorite before, but I gotta bring it back up again because of how much I love it too. This one is about Jenny, played by my girl Gina Rodriguez, who just got dumped by her long term boyfriend. The movie is about what happens after, and how she (and her squad) deal with it with one last adventure. I love the fact that this movie doesn’t dwell on what happened and why she got dumped but really emphasizing on how she deals with it afterward. For such a sad premise, I was pleasantly surprised to see how funny and entertaining this movie is and I’ve rewatched it about 5 times now (lol). It’s a relatable, cute, and heartwarming movie, and it’s got lots of subtle lessons about love that we all can learn from. Plus, they have such GREAT soundtrack, from Lorde to Lizzo to Frank Ocean – that alone is a good enough reason to watch it honestly. Highly recommend.
